Helsinki Photography Biennial 27.3.–14.5.2014


Helsinki Photography Biennial Seminar on Saturday March 29, 11 a.m-3:30 p.m.

HPB14-seminar is organized on March 29 on 11am – 3:30 pm in the Restaurant Hima & Sali at the Cable Factory (Tallberginkatu 1, Helsinki).

The seminar elaborates on the thinking behind Ecological Fallacy and Objects on Oil, and presents theoretical and artistic views on the theme of the biennial, which is about causal relations related to ecological issues. The discussants include the people responsible for the curatorial framework and a selection of theorists and artists.

Discussants of the Ecolocigal Fallacy section of the seminar include HPB14 curators Basak Senova and Branko Franceschi, Taru Elfving, Head of Programme at the Frame Visual Art Finland, as well as visual artists Serkan Taycan, Jawad Al Malhi and Tuula Närhinen.

The discussants of the Objects on Oil section include researcher of economic culture Paavo Järvensivu and visual artist Antti Majava from the Mustarinda Association, philosophers Tere Vadén and Antti Salminen as well as architect Martti Kalliala and writer Jenna Sutela.

HPB14 treats seminar participants to a vegetarian lunch. The seminar is organized in collaboration with The Green Cultural Association VISIO.

Antti Majava. Visual artist and writer based in Helsinki and Hyrynsalmi. He is a founding member of the Mustarinda Association.

Antti Salminen. Researcher and writer living in Tampere.

Basak Senova. Curator and designer. Teaches at the Department of Media and Visual Arts at Koç University, Istanbul. Lives in Ankara, works in Istanbul.

Branko Franceschi. Art historian and curator. Lives and works in Zagreb.

Jawad al Malhi. Visual artits whose practice includes painting, photography, video, and site-specific installations. He often explores marginalized communities and their relationship with their environment. He is based in East Jerusalem.

Jenna Sutela. Works with words and structures in the fields of design and media. She is based in Helsinki.

Martti Kalliala. Architect and writer. He is the founder of the design/ research studio NG0. He is based in Helsinki.

Mitro Kaurinkoski. Director of Helsinki Photography Biennial / Union of Artist Photographers.

Paavo Järvensivu. Postdoctoral researcher of economic culture, based in Helsinki. He has taken part in the critical discussion on economic growth through various events, lectures, and writings.

Serkan Taycan. Visual artist who has studied engineering and documentary photography. Taycan works primarily with photography, but he also uses maps and walking as a medium. He is based in Istanbul / Helsinki.

Taru Elfving. Head of Programme at Frame Visual Art Finland, curator based in Helsinki.

Tuula Närhinen. Visual artist whose work explores the physical and conceptual underpinnings of pictorial representation. She is based in Helsinki.

Tere Vadén. Professor at the Department of Art at Aalto University, Helsinki. He is one of the editors of the philosophical journal niin & näin.
