Helsinki Photography Biennial, a series of events on photo/lens-based contemporary art was organized in Helsinki 27 March – 14 May 2014. Biennial features contemporary art from Finland as well as abroad and is organized every two years in spring. HPB14 was produced by Union of Artist Photographers / Photographic Gallery Hippolyte in collaboration with The Finnish Museum of Photography. In 2014, the biennial aimed to examine causal relations regarding ecological issues.

The curatorial framework of HPB14 was developed by Istanbul-based curator Basak Senova, Finnish Mustarinda Association, and Zagreb-based curator Branko Franceschi.

There were in total 9 HPB14 venues, which included for instance Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, L3-warehouse in Jätkäsaari, Galleria U (Hungarian Cultural and Scientific Centre in Helsinki) and Helsinki University Main Library (Kaisa House). In addition, photographer Barbaros Kayan’s (Istanbul) project was presented among others at Helsinki Central railway station, at Bio Rex and at Hima & Sali Restaurant at the Cable Factory.

At the museum and gallery exhibitions there has been so far 7000 visitors. In public spaces, especially at Helsinki Central railway station and at Kaisa House the exhibitions have been seen by thousands of people daily.

We warmly thank  our co-operation partners whose help made our important theme and growing event visible to a larger audience. The organisers of the biennial are also very happy with the media coverage: the event has been covered from small local radios to national evening news.

If you have missed all the biennial’s exhibitions so far, don’t worry! Beautiful Ecological Fallacy and Objects on Oil Exhibitions are open at the Finnish Museum of Photography until 27 July.
